Deep Ellum Brewery – Dallas, Texas

Deep Ellum Brewing Co.

Deep Ellum Brewing Co.

Word of mouth and creative cartoon can labels guided us to this craft brewery in the nefarious neighborhood of Deep Ellum in Dallas. Their taproom is newly opened, but flowing craft suds at the rate of a veteran watering hole.

We were greeted immediately and opted, of course, for a pair of flights so that we could sample 8 of their 15 varieties of brews. Their reputation is anchored by their flavorful stouts as well as their Dallas Blonde; which happened to be C’s favorite

The samples hit all of the major beer palate categories; from ales and lagers to double and single IPA’s to rich and flavorful stouts. As tasty as their stouts were (we recommend the cherry brownie if you enjoy dessert beers), we were partial to the Dallas Blonde and Pale Ale, respectively. The Blonde had a light, smooth and citrusy flavor and was an overall well-balanced beer. The pale ale was light and tasty, despite being an oatmeal pale ale (we found this odd yet intriguing since oatmeal is usually a flavor associated with stouts). B was disheartened to hear that the pale ale is being discontinued as it is not a big seller.

Side Note: Our extensive drunken research indicates that pale ales are not popular in Texas.

B has also chosen to endorse Willy’s Scotch Ale. It has the desired oakiness of a scotch, complete with a hearty 8% ABV to satisfy most craft purists.

Game night at Deep Ellum Brewing Co.

The bar itself had ample entertainment despite its novice. There were board games provided on mostly every table and it happened to be trivia night. Trivia did distract us from things like finding dinner since the brewery does not serve food, but needless to say, we had fun.

Overall, this brewery had everything we were looking for (sans food ). We had some fun times, met some cool people and most importantly; got to sample some awesome local beers! This place gets four drunken thumbs up and if they start exporting their hoppy creations across the country, you can bet that we will be stocking our fridge with the liquid soul of Deep Ellum!

If you’re like us, you base many of your dining choices on Yelp, but if you permit our input; the more negative reviews given here are from people who are clearly not beer drinkers or who were simply having a bad day. We definitely recommend checking this place out if you are in the area.
